Technology is a word we use to describe how we design and make machines to make jobs easier and ways to make our lives better. If you look around, you’ll see lots of examples: computers and electrical appliances, cars and other vehicles, and even medicines are all different kinds of technology.
The dictionary describes ‘technology’ as meaning three things:
- using scientific knowledge for practical purposes
- machines and devices developed from scientific knowledge
- knowledge that comes from engineering and applied science
But what does this actually mean?
Well, it means taking what we learn from asking questions about the world around us, doing experiments to find out how things work, and then using the answers to make something new or invent a new way of doing something.
So, technology isn’t just learning about science things, it’s taking what you’ve learnt and doing or making something with it. This short video explains more about what technology can be.
My 6-year-old and I thought of lots of technology around our house: from the television, phones and kitchen gadgets to the way we get hot water and cook our food. How many examples of technology can you find around your home or school or workplace?
